Anas Sarwar urges Nicola Sturgeon to back Fatal Accident Inquiry into death of tragic Milly Main

Nicola Sturgeon has been urged to support a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) into the death of ten year old Milly Main at Glasgow’s super hospital.

Milly died after contracting an infection which her mum Kimberly Darroch believes was linked to water at the hospital.

At First Minister’s Questions, Sturgeon said she “completely sympathised” for a FAI with the call after being pressed by Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar.

However, she added that it was not for her to decide whether such an investigation would take place.

Milly was in recovery from leukaemia in 2017 when her catheter became infected at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) campus in Glasgow.

She went into toxic shock and died days later.

A recent report stated that an unnamed child was in the very early phase of a stem cell transplant and that a bacterial infection was the “primary cause of death”.

Kimberley has said she believes Milly is the patient.

After being quizzed on whether she supported a FAI, Sturgeon said there is “determination” to get answers and ensure lessons are learned.

Sarwar, who has fought for justice for Milly’s family, said: “Nothing I have done in my time in this parliament has been more important or more difficult than raising the case of Milly Main.

“I promised then that I would not rest until I got answers and justice for Milly and all the families affected.

“Four years on from Milly’s death we are finally starting to get answers, but her family have demanded a fatal accident inquiry and that is the very least they deserve.

“I welcome the First Minister’s comments that she understands and sympathises with this.

“But the entire QEUH scandal is another example of secrecy and failure that has had devastating consequences.

“It is just one of the huge challenges our country was facing even before Covid.

“When lockdown ends and the virus is defeated, we must focus all our energy and effort on delivering the strong and fairer recovery that Scotland needs.”
