Anas Sarwar doubles down on Douglas Ross criticism as he says Tory leader has 'no ideas' how to unite Scotland

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has doubled down on his criticism of Douglas Ross saying he has "no ideas" how to unite Scotland.

The Scottish Conservative leader wrote to Sarwar over the weekend urging them, along with the Lib Dems, to create a 'pro-Union' coalition.

It comes following the creation of Alex Salmond's Alba Party which aims to establish a 'super-majority' for independence in the Scottish Parliament following the election on May 6.

Ross wrote to Sarwar and Willie Rennie seeking an "open discussion" about working together to fight the "treat of independence".

Over the weekend Sarwar told the Tory MP to "grow up" over the proposal and said the focus of the election campaign should be about recovering together as a country from the devastating coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking earlier today he doubled down on his criticism of Ross.

Sarwar said: "What you see from Douglas Ross and Alex Salmond is a game.

"This is not a game, the election is not a game, the parliament is not a game. It is about focusing on what our priorities should be.

"Douglas keeps talking about this unionist pact. I asked him to grow up a few days ago and I'm going to emphasise something again now.

"He knows I do not support independence, or a second independence referendum, but what he is trying to do is to play a game because he has no ideas how to unite our country around the recovery plan.

"We cannot focus this election on the binary choices that the SNP and the Tories want to confront the people of Scotland with.

"One because we have a tired government that has run out of ideas after 14 years and has one obsession int their mind. On the other side you have a game playing opposition that is only interested in shouting about the constitution.

"I want us instead to bring our country together, to focus on our national recovery to not be distracted by this old arguments, egos and settling of scores."
