Recognising this growing travel fatigue, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra recently shared an alternative destination that has quickly captured the attention of travel enthusiasts across the country.
Taking to social media platform X, Mahindra reflected on how many of India's most beloved tourist destinations have become victims of their own success. Places once celebrated for their serenity, natural beauty, and fresh mountain air are now frequently associated with overcrowding and congestion.
Rather than simply highlighting the problem, Mahindra pointed travellers toward a lesser-known gem in Tamil Nadu — Valparai.
Unlike famous hill stations such as Munnar, Ooty, Manali, or Shimla, Valparai remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. For many people, the destination is still unfamiliar, which is precisely what makes it so appealing.
Sharing a series of stunning photographs captured by photographer Rakesh Pulapa, Mahindra described Valparai as a place that reminds him of what Munnar may have looked like decades ago, before large-scale tourism transformed the region.
The images showcase rolling tea plantations stretching across mist-covered hills, dense forests surrounding winding roads, and landscapes largely free from the crowds that have become common in many of India's popular mountain destinations.
One of Valparai's biggest attractions is the journey itself.
Travellers reach the hill station via a scenic route from Pollachi, navigating approximately 40 hairpin bends along the way. The drive passes through lush rainforests, picturesque waterfalls, dams, and breathtaking viewpoints, turning the journey into an experience rather than simply a means of transportation.
Nature and wildlife enthusiasts also find plenty to admire in the region. Valparai is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including elephants, lion-tailed macaques, giant squirrels, and great hornbills. Unlike many commercialised tourist towns, the area continues to maintain a strong connection with its natural surroundings.
While Mahindra jokingly acknowledged that the photographs may have been slightly enhanced, he expressed confidence that the destination's real-life beauty is equally impressive.
His recommendation quickly resonated with social media users.
Many travellers who had previously visited Valparai shared their experiences, describing it as one of South India's most underrated destinations. Several praised its peaceful atmosphere, pleasant climate, and refreshing absence of overwhelming crowds.
However, the endorsement also sparked a broader debate.
Some users questioned whether hidden destinations should be promoted at all. Their concern was straightforward: once a secluded location gains widespread attention, increased tourism can lead to traffic congestion, environmental damage, littering, and overdevelopment — ultimately eroding the qualities that made the place special in the first place.
The concern reflects a growing challenge facing the travel industry. In recent years, numerous once-quiet destinations have seen dramatic increases in visitor numbers after gaining popularity through social media, viral videos, or celebrity recommendations.
As a result, Mahindra's post evolved into a larger discussion about sustainable tourism.
Should lesser-known destinations be promoted to reduce pressure on overcrowded tourist hotspots? Or does doing so simply transfer the same problems to new locations?
There is no simple answer.
What is evident, however, is that travellers are increasingly seeking alternatives to overcrowded holiday destinations. Many are looking for experiences that offer peace, natural beauty, and genuine relaxation rather than hours spent navigating traffic and crowds.
Valparai appears to offer exactly that.
With its sprawling tea estates, rich wildlife, scenic mountain roads, and tranquil atmosphere, the Tamil Nadu hill station provides a refreshing alternative to some of India's busiest tourist destinations.
Whether it remains a hidden gem for much longer remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: following Anand Mahindra's recommendation, Valparai has firmly secured a place on the travel wish lists of many Indian travellers.
