Analyzing the terms for WR Bruce Ellington’s contract with Patriots

In desperate need of receivers, the New England Patriots added Bruce Ellington, a wideout and returner, on a one-year deal worth up to $895,000. Here’s how that number breaks down in 2019, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Chances he makes the roster: 25 percent.

What the contract means for Ellington: Ellington’s ability to return kicks and punts could work in his favor. He hasn’t done it since his early years in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers, but those skills likely haven’t evaporated during his time in Houston. He’ll be in the competition for the return jobs, particularly kick returner, a spot which is vacant after the departure of receiver Cordarrelle Patterson. But the Patriots haven’t guaranteed him much money at $25,000. Thus, they haven’t guaranteed him a spot on the roster. Ellington could prove himself as a slot option for New England, but he’ll have to compete against Julian Edelman and Braxton Berrios. New England was chasing receivers throughout free agency, which indicates they may want more help at the position. Ellington has a chance to prove himself on this deal, which is very affordable. But the Patriots will likely add bodies at the position, which will complicate his roster bid. For now, his chances of making the roster look good. But the composition of the reciter position seems very likely to change in the coming months.
