Louis Riddick rips Jay Gruden for putting in Dwayne Haskins

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden can’t win — in more ways than one.

One of those pertains to the quarterback situation, where he put rookie Dwayne Haskins into the game against the New York Giants after coaches had repeatedly said he wasn’t ready.

This has drawn hefty criticism from some, including ESPN’s Louis Riddick (h/t Scott Allen of the Washington Post):

“It reeks of an agenda, to me, as far as he’s not ready to play, the team is suffering. … I talk all the time about setting people up for success. That young man, right now, is being set up for failure, and Dan Snyder needs to recognize that. … He should’ve never went in that football game [on Sunday].”

The problem is multifaceted. If Case Keenum’s injured foot was hurting him again, Gruden didn’t have much of a choice with Colt McCoy still hurt. If yanking Keenum from the game was all about performance, then some criticism could make sense.

Either way, Haskins very much looked the part of a rookie while throwing three interceptions. How Gruden handles the situation from here will be under the microscope even more.
