Analysis of Rajya Sabha MPs Reveals Criminal Cases and Billionaire Lawmakers

According to the report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch, 73 MPs, or 32% of those analyzed, have declared criminal cases in their affidavits. Among them, 36 MPs (16%) have declared serious criminal cases, including one MP with a murder case, four MPs with cases of attempt to murder, and three MPs involved in crimes against women.

Party-wise Overview of Criminal Cases

The party-wise breakdown reveals varying levels of criminal cases among MPs:

BJP: 27 out of 99 MPs (27%)

Congress: 12 out of 28 MPs (43%)

Trinamool Congress (TMC): 4 out of 13 MPs (31%)

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP): 4 out of 10 MPs (40%)

CPM: All 3 MPs

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS): All 3 MPs

DMK: 2 out of 8 MPs

YSRCP: 2 out of 7 MPs

AIADMK: 2 out of 5 MPs

Samajwadi Party (SP): 2 out of 4 MPs

RJD: 2 out of 3 MPs

Three MPs could not be analyzed as their affidavits were unavailable. The analysis also includes 37 recently elected members. Currently, one Rajya Sabha seat from Jharkhand remains vacant.

Financial Background of Rajya Sabha MPs

The report also highlights the financial status of MPs. Out of the 229 sitting MPs analyzed, 31 (14%) are billionaires. Among major parties, MPs with declared assets over ₹100 crore include:

BJP: 6 MPs

Congress: 5 MPs

YSRCP: 4 MPs

AAP: 2 MPs

BRS: 2 MPs

NCP: 3 MPs

The total declared assets of these 229 MPs amount to ₹27,638 crore, with an average of ₹120.6 crore per MP.

The wealthiest MP is BRS’s Bandi Partha Saradhi, with assets exceeding ₹5,300 crore, followed closely by AAP’s Rajinder Gupta at over ₹5,053 crore, and YSRCP’s Alla Ayodhya Rami Reddy at over ₹2,577 crore.

At the other end of the spectrum, AAP MP Sant Balbir Singh is the least wealthy, with assets of about ₹3 lakh, followed by Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba of Manipur with around ₹5 lakh, and TMC’s Prakash Chik Baraik with roughly ₹9 lakh.

This analysis offers a comprehensive view of the criminal and financial backgrounds of the current Rajya Sabha, highlighting the intersection of wealth and legal scrutiny among India’s upper house of Parliament.
