Analysis: Falcons made the right move trading TE Eric Saubert to Patriots

Eric Saubert didn’t do enough to stay in a Falcons uniform during his time with the team, so today they traded him to the Patriots for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

Since getting selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft, Saubert had been essentially a non-factor for Atlanta’s offense.

Saubert got plenty of playing time during the last three preseasons, but he could never fully grasp what was asked of him as a blocker. Due to this, he rarely saw any time on the field during the regular season. In 2017, he was essentially red-shirted and the only snaps he did see were ones where he was blocking exclusively.

In 2018, Saubert did see nine targets come his way, but he only caught five of them and dropped a few. His abilities were limited in terms of creating separation and finding soft spots in the zone. Throw in a few drops during the 2019 preseason and it was clear that the Falcons had a player they weren’t going to get much out of.

Getting any draft pick back for him is a win.

Saubert’s projected roster spot (TE4) will likely be filled by either Logan Paulsen, Jaeden Graham or Alex Gray.
