Anaesthetist at Glasgow Children's Hospital gets special new 'sleepy doctor' job title

A doctor has received a very special new role at Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Children as part of a drive to help make the experience of being in hospital easier.

Dr Alyson Walker is a consultant paediatric anaesthetist, at the children's hospital, and received her new ID badge today.

Her new badge describes her role as a 'sleepy doctor', rather than an anaesthetist, and it seems like she's very happy with her new title!

Speaking to Glasgow Live, Alyson explained that the badge was intended to help children set to go into the theatre for surgery feel less intimidated by the environment.

She said: “Our theatre department feels like a second family.  The staff there show a lot of love, for the patients, their families and for each other.  It is a complete privilege to be part of such a fantastic team. Every day I am humbled.

“Coming to theatre can be a daunting time for children and their families.  It is our passion to make this journey as welcoming, calming and easy as possible.

"I am passionate about making the theatre experience as child and family-friendly as possible, no matter what age they are or what background they are from.

"Anything from the leaflets, to the sign posting to the way that our operating theatres are decorated will all help.  The environment is hugely important when it comes to how patients feel there."
