ANA Holdings Inc., which owns All Nippon Airways, has decided to start a cashless payment business using QR codes called ANA Pay as early as the end of this year, it has been learned.
The envisaged payment service will be available to about 37 million members of the ANA Mileage Club. In the midst of a significant downturn in business, the company hopes to lock in customers with the new service and grow it into a new source of revenue.
Initially, ANA Pay will be used for everyday purchases among other purposes. The company will eventually make it available as a means of payment for online services such as travel and insurance.
It will also be connected to the ANA Mileage Club app. To use the service, it will be necessary to link to a credit card issued by ANA Holdings that is compatible with ANA Pay. With every 1,000 yen of charges and purchases, six to 16 miles can be earned, depending on the type of card.
In ANA's business restructuring reform announced in October, the company incorporated a plan to expand the platform business model utilizing customer data.
ANA Holdings outlined a plan to double its credit card and mileage businesses, which have sales of about 200 billion yen, in five years to make it the second-largest revenue source after its airline business.
