Ana Kriegel: Two teenage boys convicted of murdering Leixlip schoolgirl appear in court for sentence hearing

The teenage boys who murdered Leixlip schoolgirl Anastasia Kriegel are due back in court today to be sentenced for the brutal killing that shocked the nation.

Known as 'Boy A' and 'Boy B', the pair were convicted of tragic Ana's murder back in June, and one of them was also found guilty of aggravated sexual assault.

The boys were just 13 years old when they murdered 14-year-old Ana in a derelict farmhouse in Lucan on May 14 2018.

Both boys are 14 now but because they're still children in the eyes of the law, their identities have been and will always remain protected.

In June, a jury found that Boy A assaulted the schoolgirl, and that Boy B lured her to the house knowing what was going to happen, watched the attack and lied afterwards.

An overwhelming amount of forensic evidence against his co-accused led to him being charged and ultimately convicted.

Both boys have been held at Oberstown Detention Centre in north county Dublin since June, but will return to court today for their sentence hearing.

On Friday, Mr Justice Paul McDermott was given psychological and psychiatric reports relating to the two. He had until those reports were completed.

Prosecution barrister Brendan Grehan SC told the judge that today's hearing today will include a summary of the evidence by a garda detective inspector and a statement by Ana’s parents.

Geraldine and Patrick Kriegel, Ana's heartbroken parents, will also be given an opportunity to address the court if they want.

The hearing is due to take a full day, but it's expected that sentences are to be handed down at a later date.

The number of members of the media present in the courtroom is restricted, with an overflow of journalists being accommodated in another room in the court building.
