All Nippon Airways Co. and Japan Airlines Co. announced separately Friday that they used sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) on regular domestic flights the previous day.

SAF are plant-derived aviation fuels jointly developed by IHI Corp., Mitsubishi Power Ltd., and other firms in a completely domestic project.

Biofuels are expected to help vastly reduce carbon emissions in the future, and both airlines aim to expand their use for domestic flights.

All Nippon Airways used an SAF made from algae, and Japan Airlines used one with a combination of algae and wood chips. Less than 1% of the biofuel was added to the regular jet fuel for the flights.
