All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines have announced plans to share equipment used to check the boarding passes of domestic passengers from May 2023.
The collaboration announced Friday between the rival companies is part of efforts to simplify boarding procedures and cut costs amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has devastated the airline industry.
Equipment for the shared system will be updated or introduced at about 30 airports in Japan, including Kansai Airport in Osaka Prefecture and Chubu Centrair International Airport in Aichi Prefecture.
The two airlines will share equipment used to check boarding passes under the new system, which will enable them to share boarding gates, simplifying the parking process for planes at airports.
Passengers will be able to expect shorter waiting times, especially when airports are crowded due to flight delays.
The companies also hope the shared system will reduce equipment costs.
