ANA Cargo Inc. has launched a temporary airfreight service between Narita Airport and Wuhan, China.
This is the first time in about three months that the ANA group will operate a Wuhan flight since a government-chartered plane carrying Japanese nationals returned from there in February. ANA Cargo is a wholly-owned subsidiary of ANA Holdings Inc.
According to ANA, passenger flights between Japan and Wuhan have been suspended since January due to the spread of the new coronavirus in Wuhan. The lockdown of Wuhan was lifted in April, and factories and other facilities there were reopened.
ANA Cargo has decided to temporarily operate three round-trip flights a week to meet growing demand for cargo transportation services, such as to transport protective masks.
The first flight departed Narita for Wuhan on Tuesday afternoon. After taking on masks and electronic equipment in Wuhan, it arrived back at Narita that night.
"We're suspending passenger flights, but we'll meet the demand for freight transportation," an ANA person in charge said.
