Last year we began testing metered access to our news app. This meant that a small number of users were prompted to become Guardian supporters if they wanted to keep reading beyond a certain number of free articles.
Following the success of this test, we are now taking the step in the evolution of our reader revenue model, as we look to explore new ways to fund Guardian journalism.
Starting in March, regular users who don’t currently pay to enjoy full access to the app will be prompted to support the Guardian financially after reading a set number of articles. Existing recurring supporters with a monthly payment of £10 or more will automatically be entitled to full access.
We are committed to keeping Guardian journalism freely available on our website to readers globally – we want to ensure it enjoys the greatest possible impact and we also appreciate that some readers may not be in a position to pay for trusted, independent news. These changes won’t significantly limit the reach of our journalism and with more readers supporting us we will be able to fund more investment in trusted, independent reporting around the world.
In the months ahead, we will listen to our readers’ feedback and we will continue to explore new ways to improve the experience of those who choose to support us.
