An Post suspend all mail to China as coronavirus outbreak continues

An Post have suspended all mail services to China as coronavirus continues to spread, with 630 deaths from the illness to date.

A statement on An Post's website reads: "Please note that ALL mail services have been suspended to China as a result of the coronavirus with immediate effect.

"This follows the decision by a number of international airlines to suspend their services.

"Up to date information is available from our Customer Services team on 01-7057600, regular updates will also be posted here."

Over 28,000 people have been infected with the virus worldwide, RTE reports.

To date, there have been no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Ireland but a number of people have been tested as a precaution.

Yesterday, it was revealed a patient, believed to be an baby, is being tested for coronavirus in Altnagelvin Hospital, Derry.

The tot travelled from Hong Kong with its parents last weekend and started presenting respiratory symptoms shortly afterwards.

The child’s parents contacted the A&E department at Altnagelvin Hospital and the baby was admitted on Thursday.

A source told Belfast Live: "The baby and family were met at the hospital by a fully prepared medical team who were wearing medical hazmat gear and masks.

"The NHS protocol is in place and the child has been placed in isolation while tests are being carried out.

"It will take a little time to get the results back which would allow the medical team to actively treat for the virus if the tests are positive.

"For now the child is undergoing tests and being treated along lines of the protocol and the situation is under control."

A spokeswoman for the Western Trust said: “We do not comment on individual patients. For information on Coronavirus go to  HSE.gov.uk/news/Coronavirus.htm."
