An Post issue Christmas delivery update as storm delays 'may take days' and US deadline nears

An Post has issued an update to customers affected by Storm Barra delays and says it may “take days” to work through the backlog.

The postal delivery service announced on Monday evening that its offices in Cork and Kerry would remain closed, while there would also be no mail deliveries or collections.

Then on Tuesday evening, it confirmed that regular letter and parcel services, collections and deliveries, will all resume tomorrow in the areas impacted by today’s red wind warning.

Although Mail Delivery Offices will operate as normal, there may still be some disruption in certain regions, particularly in coastal areas as a result of yesterday's closure.

In a statement, it wrote: “The impact of the severe weather conditions on letter and parcel services may take some days to clear given the cancellation of ferry traffic and road freight disruptions today.

“Post Offices in the areas under Red Level warning will reopen tomorrow.

“There have been some isolated closures due to power outages in various parts of the country.

“Any Children's Allowance payments due for payment today will be paid at Post Offices tomorrow (Wednesday).”

Meanwhile, anyone wishing to send Christmas gifts Stateside to friends and families has just days left to get their parcels in.

After that point, it is not guaranteed that your package will arrive before the big day on December 25, 2021.

In an update earlier this month, An Post advised people to have their packages in early this year, as they were expecting a huge volume of parcels and letters this festive season.

“Whether you’re sending to Achill Island or Sydney, Australia – the resounding advice is to send early to make sure Christmas cheer arrives on time.

“We have asked that everyone pay heed to the last dates for posting, as some destination’s last dates are rapidly approaching.

“9th December is the latest date for posting parcels and letters by standard service to the USA, and 13th December for European destinations (18th for cards).”
