An Post assure Christmas letters are still in transit with increased strain on their services

While the Christmas season is well and truly over, An Post are still dealing with the backlog of letters that are yet to be delivered, due to the incredible levels of demand that were placed on their service over the last few months.

With lockdown measures in place and social distancing practices being adhered to, 2020 was a year unlike any other for Ireland's postal service and in a statement, they announced that some letters are still in transit.

They state that the "widespread Covid-related restrictions and local lockdowns across the world" had an adverse impact on "the distribution and delivery of international parcels and letters.

A large reason for the delays in the delivery of these letters is the current restrictions on air travel, with fewer flights meaning fewer letter being delivered internationally.

The statement adds: "The number of international flights continues to be severely impacted by the Covid crisis, with only limited space available for international letters and parcels. As a result, many items posted in Ireland during December for delivery across the world are still in transit through airports and sea ports."

Also, local delivery depots across the globe have been impacted by Covid, while some areas are dealing with severe winter weather conditions.

In terms of an ETA for when these delayed letters and parcels will arrive, An Post "expects to be receiving incoming international Christmas parcels and letters for delivery in Ireland throughout January.

"The company would also like to assure customers that they will continue to deliver all international letters and parcels as soon as they are received into Ireland."
