An off-duty police officer was attacked after asking tram passengers to stop swearing in front of children

An off-duty police officer was assaulted after he asked passengers to stop swearing on a Metrolink tram.

Inspector Jon Middleton was making a journey on the tram on Friday afternoon when he asked someone to stop using foul language in front of other passengers and young children.

But the situation escalated and the officer ended up arresting a man for public order offences on the platform and getting in a struggle with him as he resisted arrest.

A woman, who accompanied the man, was also arrested after she assaulted the officer in front of shocked onlookers.

She also threatened Metrolink staff.

Police from the GMP Trafford Division attended at the scene to assist.

In a post on the GMP City Centre Facebook page, Inspector Middleton posted a photo of his t-shirt that had been left ripped after the assault.

He thanked a customer service representative who was 'brilliant' in assisting him with detaining the man.

Inspector Middleton added: "It is always good to occasionally remind oneself what it feels like to be a member of the public in a situation like that.

"With no radio, body armour, or cuffs and no colleagues nearby."

"My apologies to all the lovely people on the trams who had to watch/listen to parts of it especially the mother with young son and baby boy."
