A new report from Variety about the future of Paramount under CEO David Ellison both gave me hope and broke my heart in one simple paragraph. While the studio is looking into working on more movies in the Top Gun and Days of Thunder worlds, they also are moving on from my beloved Kelvin Verse.
Star Trek 2009 has been a very important movie in my life. I was 17 years old and my brother, who had a lifelong love of Star Trek, wanted us to all go for his 28th birthday to see it. While sitting there watching JJ Abrams’ film, I realized that Captain Kirk was meant to be hot in the original series and the rest was family history.
But my heart loved those Kelvin Verse movies. I loved watching Chris Pine take on Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto’s take on Spock is different but brilliant, and we all agree that Karl Urban’s DeForest Kelley impression is ideal. Knowing that Star Trek Beyond, the best of them, might be the last of that universe does hurt me though.
In a new report from Variety, it was shared that some projects have found death, new life, and a new vision for Paramount Pictures is reportedly underway. One part of that is reinvigorating franchises. In the past, Ellison has shared his love of Star Trek but that doesn’t mean that’s what he’s focusing on. In fact, it seems to be the opposite of what he is planning.
According to Variety, the studio does plan to bring back Star Trek movies. Just not with Pine, Quinto, and their bridge of the Enterprise. While Beyond was a let down in the box office, those movies are, in my opinion, the best that Star Trek has given us. And yes, I am including my beloved Deep Space Nine in this argument.
They allowed Star Trek to do something different!
The Kelvin Verse wasn’t the same kind of Trek story. It was more action based and the stakes felt incredibly high which isn’t always how I felt watching Trek shows. But I did love that these movies mirrored that of the original films. Yes, Star Trek: Into Darkness has issues but that movie was reflecting what Wrath of Khan did before it. Beyond had elements of Search for Spock in it. You get the picture.
Those moments really made these films something special and it does hurt to think that we won’t get a fourth film from them. Especially when the cast was on board to jump back onto the bridge.
Quinto spoke with Today back in September and said: “I feel like it’s a great time. It’s been 10 years since the last film. We all love each other. We had a great time making those movies. I think we’d all love to come back together and tell them more. I think fans would be really excited by it. And I think the time is right, if you ask me. So, we email. I was in touch with [J.J.] about something else recently, and sort of floated it out there that it feels like now’s the moment. So let’s bring it back around.”
Hopefully the report is wrong and I can rejoice but for now, goodbye my beloved Kelvin Verse. You never got the love and respect you deserve.
