New Zealand's demi-official poet laureate Victor Billot composes an ode for Speaker of the House, Trevor Mallard
Unchained Mallardy
Boomph! MC Trevski drops the mike.
Waves his chair. Fights the fight.
He’s supposed to be the referee.
But now he’s down in the melee.
We can’t remember quite
who was wrong and who was right?
Is this one of those #metoo moments?
Our tax dollars fly in his defence.
Silenced. Gagged. Zippity zipped.
But down comes the red mist, and off he rips.
Yet in the cold hard light of morning,
regret may gradually be dawning.
Queen Cindy takes him for a walk outside
and looks at him with big, sad, eyes …
The future of Mister Speaker
starts to look distinctly bleaker.
Rooster turned to feather duster.
Gander turned to quilt stuffer.
No runs on the board. Out for a duck.
This mallard is looking kind of plucked.
Victor Billot has previously been moved to write odes for such New Zealand luminaries as Mike Hosking, Christopher Luxon, and Garrick Tremain.
