An Italian Hospital Worker Allegedly Skipped Work For 15 Years On Full Pay & I Just: How?

Here’s a wild one for your Friday afternoons: a hospital employee in Italy has been accused of just straight-up skipping work on full pay for 15 whole years.

Italian news agency Ansa said the man, 66-year-old Salvatore Scumace, earned himself a pretty AUD$837,000 after 15 years in employment, despite allegedly not turning up to work at the Arnaldo Pugliese Ciaccio hospital in Catanzaro since he was hired in 2005.

How did he do this, you ask? Well.

Scumace allegedly threatened his fellow employees and forced them to turn a blind eye to his antics. Police have also accused him of threatening his first manager and her family in order to stop her from reporting him, which makes you wonder exactly who Salvatore Scumace is…

That manager eventually retired and Scumace’s serial absenteeism wasn’t flagged by her successor or the human resources department, enabling him to continue lapping it up for zero effort.

Again, who is he?

Scumace is now being investigated for fraud, extortion, and abuse of office by the Guardia di Finana, Italy’s financial law enforcement agency.

Six of his superiors have also been placed under investigation in connection with the alleged no-show. In other words, they’re being investigated for allegedly doing shit-all.

Scumace was officially fired from the hospital in October 2020, following a police investigation. Authorities reportedly studied attendance and salary records and compiled witness statements in order to build a case against him.

No word yet on whether or not Scumace has to return all that money.

According to The Guardian, absenteeism is shockingly common across the public sector in Italy. Laws had to be tightened in 2016 after a slew of police investigations unearthed numerous successful attempts to cheat time code systems.

Scumace has been dubbed the “king of absentees” by Italian media in recent days, and rightfully so.

Fifteen years, bloody hell. There’s a podcast in that.
