'An issue of integrity': Barr says Liberals must explain Chinese media reports of candidate's military service

Chief Minister Andrew Barr says the Liberals have to explain how one of their candidates featured in Chinese state media with false claims about the candidate's military service.

The articles, first published in 2015, said Robert Johnson was selected by the Australian Army to serve in a special taskforce in Afghanistan and had recently retired.

"It's been just a series of disasters for Liberal candidates in Kurrajong, it's not the first Liberal candidate in that seat to hit the wall, defer to another party, or say something silly," Mr Barr said.

"That's the issue of greatest concern at the moment, this situation where [he] has apparently completely misrepresented his military service.

"That's an issue around the candidate's integrity."

The articles quote him recalling "bullets whizzing over his head" during his time in Afghanistan.

The online articles included images of Mr Johnson in his military uniform. Mr Johnson was interviewed in his military uniform for a production called the Story of Australia, which was co-ordinated by the army's communications unit.

But he has only ever been a member of the Army Reserve, from 2013 to 2015, and has not been deployed overseas.

An Australian Defence Force spokeswoman said Mr Johnson "separated" from the reserves in early 2015.

The Canberra Liberals said the articles were inaccurate and included false quotes.

They said Mr Johnson - who is running in the seat of Kurrajong - had the original article taken down, but the story remained online on other websites.

"He continues to faithfully serve the Canberra community, including through supporting Canberra's local Chinese community," the spokesman said.

A former Army Reserves member who served with Mr Johnson said he was angered to learn of the false claims of his service.

"It's obscene and incredibly offensive for someone to report he was in the special forces," he said.

"It makes my blood boil."
