"An iconic figure" Sky Sports commentator tributes Leeds United legend Norman Hunter

Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler is the latest to pay tribute to Norman Hunter.

Leeds United confirmed that the club icon had passed on Friday morning after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

A club statement read: "Norman was taken to hospital last week after being diagnosed with COVID-19 and despite continuing to battle and the best efforts of NHS staff, he sadly lost his fight earlier this morning."

Since the saddening news, tributes have poured in from the football community, with former Leeds icons and big names across the globe passing on their condolences and paying their respects.

Tyler is the latest in a long line to pay tribute to Hunter, reflecting on a marvellous career with the Whites.

"First of all, I want to pass on my deepest condolences and sympathies to his family and his many friends in and out of football and the whole Leeds United community," Tyler told Sky Sports.

"He was an iconic figure there. He would still attend matches in a capacity as local radio and broadcaster. He always spoke warmly about the game, he was a very warm man but his tackles weren't so warm.

"He hardly ever lost a tackle but it's so sad he's lost this particular battle today. He was a very powerful defender and he was in keeping with Leeds United, they were a hard side, they certainly weren't the most popular but they were a really good side.

"They probably should have won even more than they did, a couple of league titles, cups and European adventures as well. Norman was key to that, he played over 700 games for them and I think in five seasons he never missed a game. There was always a belief he caused more injuries than he got."
