An ice rink and Christmas markets are coming to Salford Quays

An ice rink is returning to Salford Quays this winter as part of the Christmas markets at MediaCityUK.

The full-size rink will be surrounded by nearly 50 market stalls on the piazza, selling everything from Bavarian beer and bratwurst to gifts and stocking-fillers.

Guests can enjoy a gluhwein or Christmas cocktail in a weather-proof seating area with space for 600 people, and The Dockyard's outdoor bar The Lodge will also be back.

Shoppers can find more gift ideas at The Makers Market, which will host five Whoville-themed weekend markets on The Lowry Outlet plaza, inspired by The Lowry's festive show How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

MediaCityUK has not had an ice rink for several years and, combined with the markets, this promises to be its largest festive attraction yet.

Stephen Wild, managing director of MediaCityUK said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with The Lowry, Lowry Outlet and Quays Culture to programme a fantastic festive experience.

"We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors from far and wide and with so many attractions from eating, drinking and browsing at our largest ever Christmas market to watching a show and even ice-skating – there really is something for everyone this Christmas at MediaCityUK."

Both the ice rink and the Christmas markets will open on Friday November 15 to coincide with MediaCityUK's Christmas lights switch on, and will run until December 23.

They will be open from 11am daily, with the rink closing at 8pm and the market stalls shutting at 9pm. Skating sessions are available to pre-book now.

The line up for the switch-on show, which takes place from 5pm to 7pm on Friday November 15, will be announced soon.

Salford Quays will also host the annual Lightwaves digital art festival from December 6 to 15, which will include a playground of light-up musical seesaws this year .
