An Garda Siochana to spend up to €300,000 on behavioural leadership programme

An Garda Siochana will spend up to €300,000 on a behavioural leadership programme.

Tender documents concerning the Middle and Senior Management Development Programme estimates that the total will be between €240,000 and €300,000.

This is based on the full term of the contract – one year plus two options to extend for one year.

The five module programme is set to commence in the first quarter of next year at the Garda Training College at Templemore and will involve 100 participants – promoted superintendents and assistant principal officers.

The tender documentation states that majority of the managers would have already received previous supervisory management development and the new programme must be designed and delivered to achieve higher level outcomes. The overall objective of the work is to examine individual’s leadership styles, in order to heighten and enhance self-awareness.

This is to be carried out with regard to the impact of the managers’ leadership, by creating a learning environment where participants will examine how their behaviour affects the workplace, and the ability of their team to deliver a Policing Service.

The work will also seek to build a foundation for a personal development plan as the managers progress in their role.

The specific outcomes of the programme for participants will be to develop a clear understanding of the impact that their leadership behaviour has on culture and results and discuss behavioural leadership and apply it to their area of responsibility. The programme will also enhance the superintendents’ and assistant principal officers’ skills and competencies – straightforwardness, empathy, decision-making and conflict resolution - to help improve their leadership potential.

The tender states that the programme “incorporates a series of learning interventions to meet the specific personal and professional developmental needs of newly promoted personnel”.

It adds that the programme builds on the existing levels of knowledge, skills and expertise of the participants and provides the scope for further development to meet the managerial and leadership responsibilities and challenges of managers in An Garda Siochana.

The closing date for tenders is December 1.
