They then returned to the property to assist a man, aged in his seventies, away from the fire. Neither occupant was injured, although the man was brought to St Vincent's Hospital to treat his smoke inhalation.

Dublin Fire Brigade then arrived at the scene and successfully brought the fire under control. Three units tackled the violent blaze at the residence.

Chief Superintendent Matthew Nyland praised his colleagues for their selflessness on the job. He said their behaviour was reflective of the courage Gardai exhibit every day to keep members of the public safe.

He said: "Gardaí Gahan and Carton showed immense bravery entering a very dangerous situation and putting fears for their own personal safety aside to assist others. Yet, we know that this is just one fitting example of the kind of courage exhibited every day by the dedicated members of An Garda Síochána working nationwide to keep people safe."

An Garda Siochana also evacuated residents from adjoining residences, including a mews property. There has been extensive structural damage to the property's exterior.
