An explosive win over the Chargers – but there's no answer to T&T

Sunday

The dust has settled on our extraordinary victory over the Deccan Chargers on Saturday night, and now it's time to put those memories behind us and concentrate on the game against Trinidad & Tobago. Somerset's win against the Chargers was by the narrowest of margins, so our progress to the next round is in no way guaranteed – make no mistake the game against T&T is incredibly important.

There's an added incentive too: if we win both our first-round fixtures we'll carry two points through to the next round, a huge advantage in the battle to make the semis. Not only do we have the T&T players to contend with: a late night, an early start and a connecting flight also have to be wrestled with.

Monday

Ouch! I'm lying down in my room the day after our shocking result against T&T. I'm trying to find some positives out of the defeat, but it's proving a challenge. Every team has off-days and you can go down to heavy defeats. Unfortunately, ours came in the Champions League after that great win against the Chargers. It's a very bitter pill to swallow.

Straight after the defeat we went back to the hotel for our recovery swim. I think it was then that it hit us: our ragged performance could land us on a plane home. I took a step back and surveyed the scene. Everyone looked low, this particular loss is going to take some getting over.

Our fate is in the hands of others now. We only have ourselves to blame, though, so with morale at an all-time low the one thing we can do now is don the red and black of Trinidad and hope they can do us a favour by beating the Chargers.

I hope I'm in a better frame of mind next time I write, as I'm sure my disappointment is easily read between each and every line of this article. For now we just have to deal with whatever comes our way. Isn't sport just great?
