An entire year group in Newport school has to self isolate after student in Year 11 tests positive

An entire year group at a school in Newport must self-isolate for two weeks after a student tested positive for coronavirus.

Students in year 11 in St Julian's School have been asked to stay at home until November 9 after the school was informed of a positive case on Wednesday evening.

In a letter to parents and guardians, the school said the school remained open to all other students, including year 11 pupils in its learning development centre (LDC), who are in a different contact group.

It is the second time a whole year group in the school has been affected by the virus after students in year 7 were asked to stay home in September due to a positive case.

"We have unfortunately been notified late this evening of a confirmed case of Covid-19 in year 11," the school said last night.

"In line with guidance from Welsh Government, Environmental Health and Newport City Council, in the event of a positive case in a 'contact group', ie. a year group, then all students in the year group must self-isolate.

"This means that students in year 11 will now need to remain at home and self-isolate for 14 days from the day the student started to show symptoms which was Tuesday, October 20.

"Year 11 students should return to school as planned on Monday, November 9.

"The school remains open to all other students, including year 11 in the learning development centre (LDC) who are in a different contact group."

Under the fire break lockdown rules in Wales, which come into effect from this Friday at 6pm, primary schools and special educational needs schools will reopen as normal on November 2 after half term.

Secondary schools will remain closed until November 9 except for years 7 and 8.

The school added that all close contacts of the student had been identified and were receiving the appropriate advice.
