An entire year group at a Gower school is self-isolating after a Covid case

Hundreds of pupils at a Swansea school have been told to self-isolate after a student tested positive for Covid-19.

Around 200 pupils in the Year 8 bubble at Welsh-medium school Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr were asked to stay at home following the development on Wednesday, September 30.

A further 60 pupils who travel to the school in Gowerton on the same bus as the infected individual have also been asked to self-isolate.

Letters have been sent to affected parents to advise them of what they need to do.

A Swansea Council spokesman said the council and the school are working with Public Health Wales and the NHS Wales Test Trace and Protect service to ensure appropriate measures are in place to protect students, staff and the wider community.

He added: “All contacts of the case have been identified and are receiving appropriate advice to self-isolate.

“Children who have not been identified as a contact do not need to self-isolate and do not require testing for the virus.”

The rest of the school is continuing to operate normally, with letters being sent to parents of other children in the school, advising they can continue to attend as usual.

Last week, one of the school’s feeder primary schools, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llwynderw in West Cross, also revealed a proportion of its population had been told to self-isolate.

Fifty children and seven members of teaching staff were asked to do so after a pupil tested positive.

Pupils and staff at a number of other Swansea schools are already self-isolating following positive coronavirus tests.

Pupils and staff at Dunvant and Trallwn primaries have already been asked to self isolate, as well as some at comprehensives Olchfa, Pontarddulais, Bishopston, Penyrheol, and Cefn Hengoed, and at Gorseinon College.
