Is there anything Anne Hathaway can’t do? Not only is the Oscar winner starring in five films this year across a variety of genres — including Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, Verity and The End of Oak Street — but it’s just been announced that she’s working on a reboot of one of her most beloved projects.
Deadline reported on Tuesday that Disney+ will be adapting the film Ella Enchanted into a series, with Anne serving as executive producer. Screenwriter Ilana Wolpert, who previously wrote Anyone But You, will reportedly write the series, while Beth Schwartz will serve as showrunner.
The 2004 jukebox musical comedy is a satire of the fairy tale genre and is considered by fans to be a feminist reworking of Cinderella. The film follows a young woman on a quest to break a childhood curse of forced obedience while navigating a world filled with elves, giants and a charming prince.
Although it was a box-office bomb and received mixed reviews from critics (sitting at 51 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, but four stars on my personal Letterboxd account), it’s become a popular cult classic among fans over the past two decades. Because who on earth would hate the iconic scene where everyone belts out into Queen’s “Somebody to Love”?!
The film also starred Hugh Dancy as Prince Charming, Joanna Lumley as the cruel stepmother, Minnie Driver as the fairy godmother and Heidi Klum as a giantess, naturally, while the soundtrack featured Anne singing a duet of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with teen heartthrob Jesse McCartney.
Anne Hathaway’s Eras Tour
The news of an Ella Enchanted reboot comes shortly after Anne joked about the current chapter of her career being like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, as she’s been revisiting a handful of her most iconic characters.
In addition to reprising her role as Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada sequel, it was announced in October 2024 that she would be starring in a third Princess Diaries film.
“I’m actually pretty delighted that somebody’s asked me to come back and basically do the equivalent of a stadium tour and play the hits,” she told The New York Times.
“Because I went off and I did my weird thing and I followed all those instincts, I appreciate, actually, the artistry of the hits. There’s a reason why they’re beloved. They’re really, really good.”
So, what’s the next section of Anne’s Eras Tour? Well, there’s a very small chance she could make a cameo appearance in the upcoming Bride Wars TV series starring Emma Roberts that was announced earlier this year — which no one asked for, but I’ll definitely be watching.
She was replaced by Hayden Panettiere in the second Hoodwinked film, so that’s likely off the cards too, and although a Get Smart sequel was rumoured in 2010, director Peter Segal said in 2019 that too long had passed.
If it were up to me, I’d get the gang back together for an Ocean’s 8 sequel — hello, Ocean’s 9 is right there — or make a follow-up to one of my fave romcoms of this decade, The Idea of You.
Or if we’re really going all out, I want to see what her character in Interstellar got up to following the heartbreaking events of the Christopher Nolan film. At this stage, anything’s possible — and as Anne Hathaway fans would know, miracles happen.
