An eerie, chilly mist descended on Swansea beach on one of the hottest days of the year

It might be one of the hottest days of the year, but those hoping for blue skies and warm sunshine whilst out for their daily exercise would have been left disappointed earlier.

A sea fret, or mist, rolled onto Swansea Beach today, presenting an unlikely sight for dog walkers making their way along the sands.

The mist could be seen from many different areas across the city, despite the Met Office predicting temperatures for the city topping out above 22°C at 5pm.

The mist is caused when a pocket of warm air passes over the cold sea, causing the moisture in the air to condense.

It forms a fog as the air higher in the pocket starts to cool down too, and as the wind continues to blow it in, it becomes visible.

Met Office forecaster John West explained: “It is because of the warm temperatures on land that creates a difference in temperature and as the warm air rises it needs to be replaced by something which brings in the cold air and the fog from the sea.”

Sun seekers can expect ideal conditions for gardening and home barbecues before thunderstorms roll across the UK towards the end of the week.

Met Office chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: “Thursday will be another warm day with hazy sunshine although there is the potential for thunderstorms to develop across England, Wales and southeast Scotland."
