It is EA Sports College Football week! EA Sports College Football 26’s early release window opened yesterday, July 7th, and the official release is this Thursday, July 11th. After its hugely successful inaugural launch last year, EA is hoping its sophomore season can build on that success. One key element that they are hoping to build on is player abilities.
Player abilities are individual abilities for each athlete in the game; they work like most games’ skill tree systems, with bronze, silver, gold, and platinum levels that can be unlocked with XP earned throughout playing the game. Much like coach abilities (which we’ll get into in a different article), the player ability system is broken down into different archetypes. There are 44 different player archetypes, four QB types, six RB types, two FB types, seven WR types, five TE types, four OL types, four DL types, three LB types, four CB types, three safeties, and two kicking types.
The 44 archetypes, which I’ll break down at the end of this article, contain 67 physical player abilities within them, including three brand-new player abilities for the 2026 version of the game. The game also includes 14 mental player abilities, including one brand new ability for 2026. Between the mental and physical abilities, there are 84 total player abilities to unlock and upgrade for your players in EA’s College Football 26.
Each player ability has four levels, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The Bronze level typically gives a slight boost to the skill, while the silver level gives a moderate boost, the gold level gives a significant boost, and the platinum level gives an “ultimate boost”. Sometimes the higher levels, especially the platinum level, will include additional bonuses such as the new battering ram ability this year, giving platinum level players the ability to perform “Heisman caliber moments of finishing runs”. Unlike physical abilities, mental abilities cannot be upgraded through XP, and players will remain at the same level in those skills as they were initially recruited.
Let’s first examine the physical and mental abilities that were part of last year’s game and remain in this year’s addition. Then, we’ll examine the new player abilities, the one player ability that was cut from last year’s game, and finally, the article with the 44 player archetypes and the five player abilities that come with each.
