An award-winning vegan kebab house is opening in Manchester

A kebab house that serves an entirely plant-based menu is heading to Manchester this May.

What The Pitta, which was first launched in Shoreditch in London, will be opening its very first restaurant in the north following a win at the British Kebab Awards.

After scooping the prize for best takeaway in London - where it has three sites - the founders have announced their imminent arrival in the Northern Quarter.

Although the site is being kept under wraps for now, it will have space for between 80 and 100 diners once the build is complete.

What The Pitta was founded by Cem Yildiz and Rojdan Gul, after Cem decided to go plant-based and was introduced to Roj's uncle's vegan kebab recipe.

After opening in a shed at The Pump in trendy Shoreditch in 2016, they've gone on to open two further sites in London and a fourth in Brighton.

Roj said: "Brighton was a big step for us, but it's only an hour and a half from London, so it was just a little step to see how we'd go outside London.

"Now we've decided it's time to venture a bit further.

"We actually came to Manchester last November, we were there for a Skepta concert and just hanging out in the Northern Quarter - I just said 'This really reminds me of Shoreditch', which is where we started out.

"We just really liked it."

Dishes at What The Pitta include doner kebabs, gyros, mezze boxes and falafel wraps - all entirely plant-based.

Roj said: "We want to change the image of the kebab - not only is it plant-based, but people eat them at lunch rather than just at 2am after a night out.

"We make everything fresh on site, from the bread to the hummus.

"It's just an option there for people who want to eat a tasty kebab but maybe have a healthier option."
