'An absolute joke': Bristol Airport flyers left on tarmac amid Storm Ciara chaos

Bristol Airport passengers were left stranded on the tarmac after Storm Ciara caused "extremely challenging" conditions yesterday (February 9).

The arrival of Storm Ciara brought disruption to Bristol and the West Country on Sunday, including road closures and delayed rail services.

Several flights in Bristol were also cancelled or delayed, leading to an "unprecedented number of aircraft" arriving at the airport at the same time.

The chaos led to coaching delays, with angry passengers being forced to wait on the tarmac.

We are bringing you live weather, traffic, travel and Bristol Airport updates here.

One unhappy passenger told Bristol Live: "After enduring over two hours of delay flying from Belfast to Bristol on the 8.50pm flight on Sunday you would think it wouldn't get worse. Well unfortunately for the poor passengers it could.

"They then have to endure a further 1.5hours (current estimate) sitting on the plane as there were not enough/or no bus drivers available.

"Not a word of compensation either...only a half hearted apology."

Other flyers took to Twitter to express their frustration.

Chris Wood commented on Twitter: "Bristol Airport flight KL1057 landed over 30 mins ago but we can’t disembark as no bus to take passengers to the terminal! Where are all the buses??"

Another person said: "Over a two hour flight delay to finally get back at Bristol Airport only to be told we have to sit tight until the coach arrives with over a forty minute wait."

A third added: "Bristol Airport this is an absolute joke, sat on the tarmac waiting for the bus, and we have been told 45 minutes at least."

Paul Forster said: "Sat on the tarmac awaiting the ground crew to help us off the flight.

"Pilot tells us that it'll be 30+ mins and we're already 2 and half hours late."

What Bristol Airport said

Bristol Airport apologised for the delays and added that passenger safety is its number one priority.

"There were coaching delays experienced on Sunday regrettably, and we apologised to passengers at the time, and would again," an airport spokesperson said.

"Yesterday's operation was extremely challenging with a large number of flight delays and aircraft operating off schedule due to Storm Ciara, and at times an unprecedented number of aircraft arrived and had to be dealt with all at the same time.

"We would like to thank passengers for their patience but as always passenger safety is our number one priority."
