'An absolute blinder' - Fans erupt following sensational Sari van Veenendaal performance

There are plenty of Arsenal links in today's World Cup final between the Netherlands and the United States, with three players from the Gunners in action.

Vivianne Miedema, Danielle van de Donk and Jill Roord were all chasing a victory in order to return to North London for the new season with a World Cup medal around their neck - but it was a former Arsenal player who had the biggest say in the first half.

Sari van Veenendaal, who is searching for a new club after leaving Arsenal at the end the campaign following victory in the Women's Super League, made a number of sensational saves to keep the United States at bay.

The defending champions and favourites to retain their crown, the USA enjoyed the lion's share of possession in Lyon during the opening 45 minutes but, despite creating numerous opportunities, could not find a way past the experienced stopper.

One particular highlight was a superb double save to prevent Sam Mewis and golden-boot chasing Alex Morgan from opening the scoring, as she kept the European champions in the match.

Her displays did not go unnoticed on social media, as many fans flocked to laud praise upon the former Arsenal stopper following her display.
