Colloquially referred to as the “Oscars of the East Coast”, the annual Met Gala black-tie spectacle might is one of the most intensely coveted events of the year.
But it would be foolish to assume all celebrities are as effusive about it as many would predict.
Amy Schumer has confessed she found the fashion event, formally known the Costume Institute Gala, far from fun and said it felt like a “punishment” instead.
“I left earlier than I should have been allowed,” the 35-year-old Trainwreck actor recalled in an interview on the Howard Stern Show on Tuesday.
“I got to meet Beyoncé and she was like, ‘Is this your first Met Gala?'” Schumer said. “And I was like, ‘It’s my last’. I figured I should have been grateful I was invited or something but it felt like a punishment. It’s not me and I don’t like it.”
“We’re dressed up like a bunch of f***ing a***holes,” she added.
“I have no interest in fashion, I like the idea of coming up with a way to dress that's more comfortable, that sounds good to me, other than that I don’t care.”
When asked what she thought more generally about networking with celebrities at events, Schumer said it was her “worst nightmare”.
“It’s all so fake, It’s people doing an impression of having a conversation … I don’t like the farce,” she explained.
Gwyneth Paltrow was equally unimpressed with the Met Gala. Speaking to Australian radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O in 2013 about the event, she is reported to have said: “Do you want me to be honest? It sucked.”
“You always say, 'Oh my God. This is going to be so glamorous and amazing and you’re going to see all these people.’ And then you get there, and it’s so hot. It’s so crowded. Everyone’s pushing you. This year it was really intense. It wasn’t fun”.
Demi Lovato, the singer and former Disney actress, appeared to side with Paltrow and Schumer after her debut at this year’s gala.
“This picture pretty much summed up my first and probably last met #cool #sofuckingawkward #notforme #sweatpants #forensicfiles #whatsgood,” she joked. She later added: “PS some of y'all need to learn how to take a joke.”
