The editor-in-chief of Glamour has defended the magazine after Amy Schumer criticised it for including her in what she labelled a “plus size only issue”.
Schumer vented her frustration at being included alongside Ashley Graham, Melissa McCarthy and Adele in a special edition of the US magazine. Writing on Instagram, she said although there is nothing wrong with being “plus-size”, in the US it is considered a size 16 whereas she is a size 6-8. “Young girls seeing my body type thinking that is plus size? What are your thoughts? Mine are not cool glamour not glamorous,” she wrote.
Cindy Leive, editor-in-chief of the magazine, apologised to Schumer if she was unhappy about being included in the edition but maintained that her name was listed under the “women who inspire us” section.
“I’m certainly sorry that she didn’t like being named on the cover and I’m sorry that she wished her piece hadn’t been included,” Ms Leive told Nightline. “But I’m confident that the message of the issue, which is that there are great clothes out there for all of us, is one that will resonate with our readers."
Ms Leive also said that she does not think the comedian is “plus size” while making her reluctance to use the term clear - something that resonates with Graham and McCarthy who have supported calls to drop the label.
“I don’t believe that Amy Schumer is ‘plus size’, that’s not a term that I love, but it’s very clear she’s not what people mean when they say ‘plus size’ but that wasn’t the intent at all. The cover line says ‘women that inspire us’ and we felt the audience for the special edition would be inspired by her completely hilarious and constant consistent message of body positivity.”
Following Schumer’s criticism, Glamour issued a statement saying the magazine did not describe her as “plus size” but apologised for offending her in any way.
The special edition of the magazine was aimed at women of US size 12 (UK size 14) and above. A 2015 cover interview with Schumer was included in the issue while model of the moment size 16 Graham graced the cover.
