Amy-Lee Hughes sudden death sends shock waves around Co Down community

The Downpatrick community has been plunged into heartache following the death of a 21-year-old woman.

Amy-Lee Hughes, tragically died yesterday evening just five years after the death of her mother who battled cervical cancer in 2014.

Friends and family have taken to Facebook to remember Amy-Lee, who recently celebrated her daughter Aria Maria's first birthday.

Her aunt, Michelle Hughes, told Belfast Live that Amy-Lee was an amazing mum who had a bright future.

Michelle said: "We are all absolutely distraught and in complete shock.

"When I was told last night I thought it was some sort of a sick joke, and when I realised it was true, I just broke down.

"Amy-Lee decided that this world wasn't for her anymore.

"Her suffering must have been over-whelming for her that she seen no other way out of her troubles.

"Amy-Lee is now with her mummy, and her young daughter Aria will be given the most unbreakable love and support from all of her family."

Michelle called on local representatives to ' help our communities ' following this tragic news.

She said: "It is heartbreaking that a young girl could not get any help for her mental health.

"A young mother who had such an incredible future ahead of her.

"More help and support networks need to be highlighted for our young people so that they know where to turn to in times of despair.

"Never in a million years did I think I would get this phone call, I just don't have any words to describe how much we are all in bits."

A spokesperson for the Downpatrick Parish offered his condolences to the family.

He said: "We offer our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Amy-Lee Hughes, beloved daughter of Conor Dobbin and the late Maria Hughes, much loved mummy of baby Aria Maria.

"May she rest in peace."

SDLP representative John Trainor passed on his condolences.

He told Belfast Live: “I’m saddened to hear of such a tragedy especially with someone so young and full of life, this will touch so many in our community.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family and baby Aria at this difficult time. “
