Amtrak police officer charged with murder in shooting near Chicago's Union Station

CHICAGO _ An Amtrak police officer has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting while he was on duty near Union Station last week, authorities said.

LaRoyce Tankson, 31, was charged after he surrendered to law enforcement authorities late Thursday, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.

He is accused of fatally shooting Chad Robertson, 25, of Minneapolis on Feb. 8. Robertson was taking a bus from Memphis, Tenn., to Minneapolis and was on a stopover in Chicago, police said.

According to family members, Tankson fired at Robertson as he ran during an encounter near Union Station. The officer fired twice, striking Robertson once in the left shoulder, police said.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Robertson was found with cash and narcotics, but was unarmed.

Attorney Douglas Hopson, of Chicago, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that Robertson's family is considering a wrongful death lawsuit against the officer.
