Amsterdam bans guided Red Light District tours

Amsterdam is set to ban guided tours of the Red Light District from next year.

The ban will come into force from January 1, 2020 - so tour operators have the chance to get in line with the new rules.

The Municipality of Amsterdam explained in a statement that the new rules are being brought in because the tours "are not respectful towards sex workers", while also causing over-crowding and too much foot traffic - reports Mirror Online.

The new rules won't ban tourists from wandering through the neighbourhood on their own accord - it will just be guided tours which will be affected.

It's estimated that over 1,000 groups pass through the Oudekerksplein neighbourhood every week.

During peak times, there can be as many as 28 groups on the square.

The city is also cracking down on the size of tour groups. Currently guided tours can have up to 20 participants, but this will change to a maximum of 15 people as part of the new regulations.

Guided tours which take place in the neighbourhoods outside the Red Light District will also be subject to new regulations, in that they will need to be granted an 'exemption' from the city in order to carry out the visit.

Currently guided tours of the Red Light District are allowed, although tour operators have to follow a set of existing regulations such as sticking to specific time frames, maximum group numbers and also having special permission to be hosting the tour.

It's not the only way in which Amsterdam is looking to control the crowds of tourists which descend on the Dutch capital every year.

In 2017, local authorities introduced a ban on beer bikes in the city, after residents complained that these caused traffic issues due to their slow pace, not to mention the loud and drunken groups of tourists to be found riding them.
