Amritpal Singh's wife Kirandeep Kaur alleges harassment in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail

AMRITSAR: Kirandeep Kaur, wife of Amritpal Singh, the detained chief of Waris Punjab De (WPD), expressed her surprise and frustration over the alleged harassment she faced during her routine meeting with her husband in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail on Thursday.

Kaur claimed that a senior police officer, to the rank of Superintendent of Police, interrogated her before allowing her to meet her husband.

She alleged that the officer insisted she should travel to Guwahati for questioning, despite not providing any documents to support his claims.

Kaur had gone to Dibrughar jail along with the wife and son of another detainee Daljit Kalsi for a weekly meeting.

Kaur described the incident as unnecessary harassment without any valid reason. She said that since she refused to comply with the officer's demands, he had no choice but to leave.

Kaur further informed that the police officer had told her to follow her to Dibrugarh airport to meet her, but upon reaching the airport, he was nowhere to be found.

She also claimed that no questioning was done to the wife of Daljit Kalsi. "She was not questioned, she even didn’t know that the police officer was there", said she.

She also noted that the Thursday's meeting itself took place in a different environment compared to previous ones, with jail staff constantly staring at them, making her feel like a criminal.

Expressing her dissatisfaction with the manner in which she was treated by the police, Kaur said that she intends to consult her lawyers and file a complaint regarding the incident.

When asked about Amritpal's reaction, she said: "Amritpal Singh was deeply disappointed upon hearing about the incident since the police officer had already left before Amritpal arrived to meet her".

In the recent past, the relatives of Amritpal had accused the Punjab government of denying permission for him and other detainees to meet their advocates at Dibrugarh jail in Assam.
