Amount State Pension will rise next April is confirmed for all claimants

The amount state pensions could rise by next April has been revealed after the rate of inflation hit 3.1%.

The government typically uses the September inflation figure to calculate how much state pensions should increase by each year - as Mirror Online reports.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirmed the consumer prices index rate of inflation today - which is slightly down on August's record 3.2% increase.

The Prime Minister called off a proposed 8.8% increase in state pensions last month when he suspended the triple lock increase.

Retirees were told their income in 2022 would increase by whichever is highest out of 2.5% or the rate of inflation.

Based on current figures, this means the state pension will rise by more than £5.50 a week next April.

The target rate of inflation set by the Bank Of England for inflation is 2%, but the bank warned inflation could reach 4% by the end of the year, sending the cost of living soaring.

The current full, new state pension is £179.60 a week, or around £9,339 a year.

A rise of 3.1% would add an extra £5.56 a week to the payment, increasing it to £185.15 a week.

Over the year that's £9,628.50, and an extra £289.50.

Those who reached the state pension age before April 6, 2016, get the old state pension, known as the basic state pension which is currently £137.60, or £7,155.20 a year.

A rise of 3.1% would add an extra £4.26 a week to the payment, increasing it to £141.86.

Over the year that's £7,377 and an extra £221.81.
