Amount Edinburgh council tax set to rise in April confirmed by city leader

Edinburgh council taxes are set to rise three per cent the Edinburgh Council leader has confirmed to the Sunday National amid speculation with East Lothian set to follow.

The capital is the first of Scotland's local authorities to announce the increase but it's likely most will follow after the freeze to council taxes in 2021 across the country.

Adam McVey confirmed to the Sunday paper that Edinburgh residents can expect a three per cent increase in their council taxes from as early as April., with Councillors in the city set to vote on the three per cent rise in the coming weeks.

All 32 councils across Scotland are due to set their council tax levels in the coming weeks, with rises of between three and five per cent appearing likely.

The SNP council leader told the National: "“With the Tory cost of living crisis, we’ve listened carefully to the need to limit council tax increases to 3 per cent.

“I’m grateful to the Finance Secretary for giving so much of her own time and setting out the Government’s position so openly.

“We will continue to have dialogue on the issues that matter most to people in Edinburgh and making sure that the council’s position is as strong as it can be to deliver the best possible services for our residents.”

East Lothian Councillors will also be asked to approve a 3% council tax rise in the coming year as officials look to plug a £10 million funding gap.

Edinburgh city council chief Adam McVey confirmed the planned increase to the Sunday National amid speculation, the country’s other local authorities will most likely follow suit.

Council tax bills across Scotland were frozen last year to help local residents cope with the pandemic after the Scottish Government provided local authorities with £90m from its Budget instead.
