Plans for a sequel to the hit video game Among Us have been cancelled.
According to the developers, the plans were aborted in order to dedicate efforts towards improving the original via updates.
Innersloth, who created the space-set multiplayer murder mystery game, revealed that the recent spike in popularity has prompted them to change priorities, after a sequel was initially announced in August.
Among Us was first released in 2018, but has undergone a surge in popularity in recent months after a number of prominent Twitch streamers began playing the game.
Data from the games distribution website Steam reveals that Among Us grew from having an average of 4.5 PC users logged on at any one time in January 2019, to 107,000 in the past month.
A statement on the game’s website reads: “The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content.”
“However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level.”
They added that they have “decided to cancel Among Us 2” and will be putting “all [their] focus” into improving the first game.
“All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1,” revealed the developers.
