Amol Muzumdar likely to continue as Mumbai coach this season

MUMBAI: Domestic stalwart Amol Muzumdar is likely to continue as the Mumbai senior team's head coach for the forthcoming season, TOI has learnt.

In the just-concluded season, which was Muzumdar's first as Mumbai coach, the domestic giants crashed out in the league stage of both the limited over tournaments - the T20 Mushtaq Ali Trophy and 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy - but bounced back to reach the Ranji Trophy final, where they lost to Madhya Pradesh by six wickets at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

At a meeting of the MCA's Cricket Improvement Committee on Thursday, it was felt that for the sake of continuity, all the Mumbai coaches of the previous season should be retained for the coming season.

"We lost in the Ranji final, but discovered so many talented youngsters - Suved Parkar who slammed a double century on debut being an example along the way. Since all the Mumbai teams did well last season, it's better to reappoint the same set of coaches so that off-season camps can begin soon. The new domestic season is likely to begin by the first week of September," a reliable source said.

The CIC is headed by former India batsman Jatin Paranjape and includes ex-India cricketers Vinod Kambli and Nilesh Kulkarni.

The Mumbai Under-25 team won the Col CK Nayudu Trophy under coach Rajesh Pawar, while the under-19 team, guided by Amit Velaskar, reached the Cooch Behar final.
