Ammunition and class A drugs were found on a disused railway line.

Merseyside Police confirmed the find following the first day of the Neighbourhood Policing Week of Action.

The scheme has been launched to showcase the work of the neighbourhood policing teams.

Sefton Police Facebook page shared the find, with the South Sefton Team carrying out a sweep of a disused railway line on Hapsford Road, Bootle at around 11.50am.

This is when they saw something "stashed away" and hidden in the ground.

Officers found a box of ammunition in a pipe on the train track.

A further search of the area from Warton Road up to the bridge on Linacre Road then took place, which resulted in the finding of suspected class A drugs.

These were safely removed from the area by the officers.

Sergeant Chris Taylor said: “This week is about showcasing just what each team, who make up Neighbourhood Policing do and how we support and protect the local community.

"This find is significant in taking potentially lethal ammunition off our streets and harmful drugs out of circulation. Anyone that knows where any other illegal weapons or ammunition, stolen items or drugs should get in touch and help us keep our communities as safe as they can be.”

The Facebook post, uploaded yesterday afternoon, said: "Today is the first day of Neighbourhood Policing Week o fAction and the South Sefton Team are off to a great start, carrying out a sweep of a disused railway line in Bootle they saw something stashed away hidden in the ground.

"They turned out to be ammunition and drugs, which have now been safely removed from the streets of your community."
