The largest Catholic health care system in Illinois has a new head honcho.

Amita Health — a joint venture between Ascension’s Alexian Brothers, Advents Midwest Health and Presence Health — announced Keith A. Parrott as its new president and chief executive Monday.

Parrott comes to Amita after being an executive at hospital groups based in Alabama and Texas.

Randy Haffner, chairman of the board at Amita Health, described Parrott in a statement as “a mission-focused leader who has a history of producing sustainable results that enable nonprofit hospitals to meet community needs.”

Parrott will assume his new roles on January 13.

“I’m looking forward to meeting and working with the associates, caregivers and providers who make Amita Health a leader in bringing compassionate, personalized care to individuals across the region,” Parrott said in a statement.

Amita’s founding CEO Mark Frey stepped down from his post nearly four months ago.

In May, Amita Health walked away from a hotly contested $5.6 million tax increment financing subsidy two weeks after the Chicago Board of Ethics slapped Ald. Edward Burke (14th) with a $2,000 fine for presiding over a Finance Committee hearing when aldermen debated and approved the money.

Presence Health Care — which garnered criticisms from certain aldermen for its opposition to abortion and contraception — had been a client of Burke’s law firm.

According to the company’s website, Amita Health is comprised of 19 hospitals and 7,000 physicians serving more than 6.6 million people in the greater Chicago area.
