Amir Khan vs Kell Brook announcement serves as warning to Tyson Fury & Anthony Joshua

Amir Khan and Kell Brook are finally set to face-off in the ring, following a fight announcement for the pair that will see them meet in February.

The two British fighters have a longstanding rivalry but, in the peak of their careers, did not manage to meet each other head-to-head.

In January 2018, following Khan' s victory over Phil Lo Greco, Brook, who was on punditry duty, entered the ring and the pair exchanged words. Later that year, Eddie Hearn declared it was 'now or never' for the fight.

Khan would then suffer defeat against Terence Crawford before beating Billy Dib in 2019 - and he has not returned to the ring since.

Brook, meanwhile, first spoke about a bout against Khan a decade ago, in 2012, and reiterated that stance two years later. In 2017, talks did take place but no agreement was reached - leaving fans waiting.

10 years on from Brook's initial comments and two years since Khan last fought in the ring, fans are getting the fight they wanted to see - although the pair's stock is significantly lower than it once was.

Both fighters would find themselves well down the list when you ask someone to name their best active boxers in Britain and the fight, unfortunately, will be seen as an exhibition bout rather than the fierce battle between two arch rivals it once could have been.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, as exhibition boxing results in some huge contests, but it comes at a time where fans may well be getting frustrated with the amount of fights that are taking place that are merely a cash cow - notably including Youtubers, UFC fighters or professional boxers well past their prime.

A fight between Khan and Brook will be far better than some of those encounters but it should also serve as a warning to Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, who have so far seen a bout against each other escape their grasp.

Like Khan and Brook, there were discussions between the two fighters - and it appeared a fight would go ahead last summer with an agreement reached for a tie in Saudi Arabia, which was then cancelled following the court ruling that Fury must honour his rematch with Deontay Wilder.

Since then, Joshua has lost his belts to Oleksandr Usyk and, if a unification bout is to occur, he'll have to win in the rematch - as defeat may remove him from the Fury picture altogether, as there would be little to persuade Fury to take a fight.

That's not to say Fury and Joshua will never meet in the ring if AJ loses again to Usyk but, like Khan and Brook, it would likely come too late to be the top-of-the-world encounter that the supporters are desperate to see.
