Amir Khan announces retirement from boxing after defeat to rival Kell Brook: ‘I feel blessed’

Amir Khan has announced his retirement from boxing after falling to defeat in his grudge match against Kell Brook earlier this year.

The Manchester fight was shortly followed by Brook’s confirmation that he is hanging up his gloves, and 35-year-old Khan followed suit with a social media statement on Friday.

“It’s time to hang up my gloves,” he wrote.

“I feel blessed to have had such an amazing career that has spanned over 27 years.

“I want to say a heartfelt thanks and to the incredible teams I have worked with and to my family, friends and fans for the love and support they have shown me.”

Khan retires with a record of 34 wins and six defeats having broken into the spotlight with a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games.

He went on to unify the light-welterweight divsion, first winning the WBA belt against Andreas Kotelnik in 200.

The Bolton fighter has grown his profile outside of the ring with charity and reality television work, having lost his last two world title fights; to Canelo Alvarez in 2016 and Terence Crawford in 2019.
