May 16--Several area streets will be temporarily closed early Sunday as the largest cycling race in America concludes its final leg, with the course extending from downtown Los Angeles through Highland Park and into Pasadena.
The 724-mile Amgen Tour of California, which began in Sacramento on May 10, will begin its last phase at 9:15 a.m. Sunday at L.A. Live and is expected to wrap up in Pasadena by 12:30 p.m., organizers said.
Street closures will begin as early as 7 a.m. Sunday, city transportation officials said. Roads will reopen as racers pass by.
The course will temporarily close Temple, Main, Olive and North Spring streets in downtown. As the racers head toward the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, roads in the Highland Park and Eagle Rock areas such as Marmion Way, Monte Vista Street, North Figueroa Street and Colorado Boulevard will also be closed.
The eight-stage race began in Sacramento and continued through San Jose, Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara and other parts of California. Cyclists on Saturday must complete a grueling trek from Ontario to the summit of Mt. Baldy before racing Sunday in L.A.
The annual cycling race is in its 10th year and draws some of the world's best known cycling teams. Los Angeles has hosted a stage two times in the past, including the overall finish in 2012.
The women's race, which began May 8 at South Lake Tahoe, featured four stages and was completed earlier this week.
